Green Mountains

The program for the Mettawee Spring Concert centered upon the wisdom of Albert Einstein. “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician,” observed the genius and Nobel Laureate. “I often think in music. I have my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”

All the attributes of melody, harmony and rhythm were on full display at the school’s annual festivities, designed to celebrate a year of musical growth, collaboration, and community spirit.

“It’s always fun to see the progression of skills through the grade levels on one stage, starting with our kindergartners and culminating in refined performances by the 5th and 6th grade band and chorus,” said Mettawee Community School music teacher Lisa Hoyt. “Mettawee has a very supportive audience of families and staff and these kids really earned their applause. It was a great concert.”

The production opened with These Green Mountains, the state song of Vermont, then launched into a series of numbers that let the students shine.

There were traditional songs like London Bridge and Itsy Bitsy Spider, as well as a song and dance demonstration of a Virginia Reel. Literacy and geography, meanwhile, were highlighted in catchy numbers like Backward ABC’s and Fifty Nifty United States! The kids showed off their newfound skills with ukuleles, recorders, and traditional band instruments.

The concert featured familiar tunes from popular artists like Cat Stevens and Ray Charles. The kids also rocked out to a drum solo performance of Wonderwall, by Oasis.

“The Spring Concert is a wonderful celebration of the students' hard work,” said MCS Principal Brooke DeBonis. “The families were happily listening to the students sing and play their instruments. It was a beautiful evening filled with joy!”

Einstein may be long gone, but his love of music lives on at Mettawee.
